How to Check Telstra Bands Before Buying a Phone

A phone can be waterproof, drop-rated and fitted with a massive battery, yet still be the wrong tool for the job if it cannot connect properly where you work. Do not rely on a listing that simply says “Telstra compatible”. A mobile band is a slice of radio spectrum used to carry your call and data connection. Different bands behave differently. For 5G, look for n78 (3500 MHz), which is widely associated with higher-capacity 5G service, along with lower-band 5G support such as n5 (850 MHz) and n28 (700 MHz) where available. Telstra continually upgrades and refarms its network, so a band list is not a permanent map of service. It is a compatibility check, not a promise of coverage.

For a worker who needs dependable calls and messaging beyond metro areas, 4G Band 28 is usually the band you do not want to miss. That does not mean Band 28 alone makes a phone Telstra-ready. It needs to work alongside the right 4G calling features, firmware and other bands for your area.

Read the bands properly

A proper specification usually writes bands as LTE B28, B5 or B3 for 4G, and 5G NR n78, n5 or n28 for 5G. The letters matter. LTE and 5G NR refer to different network technologies, so B28 and n28 are related frequencies but not the same capability.

Be wary of listings that only state frequencies such as “700 MHz” without naming the band. Frequency alone can be incomplete because networks can use different arrangements and technical settings. A serious seller should be able to confirm the actual LTE and 5G band numbers.

Also check the model variant. One manufacturer can produce a global version, a North American version and a China-focused version with very different radios. A cheap import can look identical to the Australian-ready model right down to the colour and camera layout. The difference is inside the phone, where it counts.

Check calling compatibility, not just reception

Signal bars are only part of the job. Your mobile must support VoLTE – Voice over LTE – for normal calling on Telstra’s 4G network. It also needs to meet Telstra’s current device requirements for emergency calling capability following the 3G shutdown.

Before purchase, ask the retailer a direct question: is this exact model suitable for Telstra after the 3G closure, including 4G VoLTE calls and emergency calling requirements? If you already own the phone, insert an active Telstra SIM, enable VoLTE in the mobile network settings if the option is available, and make a test call with Wi-Fi turned off. Confirm that the phone stays on 4G or 5G while the call is active. If it drops to an unavailable network type, fails to call, or shows an error, do not assume a settings reset will fix a hardware or network-profile limitation.

Use Telstra coverage information for your actual work area

Network bands tell you what a phone can use. A coverage map tells you what may be available where you need it. Check your home, regular worksite, sheds, depot, farm boundary, highway route and any remote accommodation you use. A phone that works well in the nearest town may be poor at the back paddock or inside a steel-framed workshop.

Coverage maps are predictions, not field guarantees. Terrain, tree cover, weather, building materials, vehicle cabins and network congestion all affect results. If your work is safety-critical, use the map as the starting point and then test a suitable phone on site during normal work conditions.

For remote work, prioritise the bands that support range and coverage before chasing headline 5G speed. Fast 5G is useful around town and on large sites, but a stable low-band 4G connection is often more valuable when you are kilometres from the nearest tower.

Verify a rugged phone before you commit

A proper rugged phone purchase is not just about the IP rating, thermal camera or battery size. Ask for the supported Australian band list and confirmation of Telstra calling suitability in writing. If the seller cannot identify the model code, cannot explain whether Band 28 is present, or brushes off VoLTE questions, walk away.
